Zoey Redbird
Zoey is the protagonist in the House of Night series. Zoey had an enormous awakening when she entered the House of Night, a school for becoming vampires. Not only did she stand out, but she is the first fledgling, transition stage before vampire, in history to receive an affinity for all five elements. This ability gave her a special connection with the vampire goddess, Nyx. Zoey was also "marked to become a vampire with the sapphire-colored crescent moon tattoo between [her] eyes and the elaborate filigree of interlocking lacework that framed [her] face" in her first year at the School of Night. This was unusual because most vampires do not receive marks (other than the crescent moon on their foreheads) until they have fully experienced the change from a human, to a fledgling, to a vampire. Zoey is also the leader of the Dark Daughters, a prestigious club for those worthy to worship the goddess. Zoey has struggled with her family life, which has caused her to be more and more grateful for her opportunities away from her family at the House of Night. She does not agree with the decisions that her mother has made in marrying a strict, cruel, extremely religious man that treats Zoey like she is a monster. Therefore, Zoey does not ever see her mom or her step-dad, but she can always rely on her grandma to visit her and cheer her up. Zoey's grandma is always there for her and helps her go through the change. Zoey was blessed to have found a tightly knit group of friends that she can always rely on. Sadly, one of her best friends rejected the change and passed away, leaving Zoey to try to understand the depth of the loss of her other half. Throughout the story, Zoey has to cope with the loss of her best friend, balance her time between her friends and THREE boyfriends, and learn how to lead the Dark Daughters with success.
